The EFFORT partnership works to optimize energy resource utilization in Port of Hirtshals through optimization, flexibility and sector coupling using intelligent data-driven solutions.
The term “sector coupling” refers to the integration of different types of energy, e.g. electricity, heating or cooling. By coupling the different sectors, the synergy between energy production and energy consumption can be maximized and thus contribute to efficient energy use.
For ports and other energy-intensive industrial clusters, there is significant potential to reduce CO2 emissions – both nationally and internationally. Additionally, optimal integration of these energy flows can improve operational efficiency and generate economic benefits.
The goal is to develop management methods and establish guidelines for the future expansion of the port, where energy flexibility, sector coupling and digitalization are keywords.
The vision is for industrial clusters and ports to leverage the project’s insights and guidelines to drive the green transition by developing more flexible and efficient energy solutions in the future.
THE CHALLENGE
Today, green energy production faces the challenge that wind and solar power do not always generate the most electricity when the demand is greatest. Simply put, we can’t control the weather, yet we also can’t run businesses at the mercy of it. Ports are major energy consumers, and without flexible energy solutions, the result is both higher costs and greater climate impact. Aligning energy production with consumption remains a key challenge, as does making full use of surplus energy, such as excess heat. There is a clear need for smarter digital control systems that can help address these issues.
the solution
EFFORT creates a smarter energy system by:
- Using data to optimize energy use and minimize waste
- Integrating electricity, heating, cooling and transport to ensure optimal energy use
- Developing scalable models and guidelines that other ports and industries can apply to save energy and reduce costs
- Collaborating with port-based companies on concrete solutions and pilot projects
The project will also demonstrate how smarter energy management can reduce the need for costly electricity grid expansions by making better use of existing infrastructure.
impact
EFFORT aims to provide guidelines for Port of Hirtshals become more energy-efficient and climate-friendly. This will lead to lower CO₂ emissions, reduced costs for businesses, and a more stable and flexible energy system.
The solutions and insights gained from the project are intended to pave the way for the green transition in other ports and industrial areas across Denmark and the rest of Europe.
