CO2VISION is a business lighthouse project focused on developing and testing solutions for the capture, utilization, and storage of CO₂ (CCUS). The aim is to position North Jutland as a frontrunner in green technology and contribute to Denmark’s national climate goals. The project brings together businesses, researchers, and public authorities to build a strong, integrated value chain where CO₂ is no longer viewed as waste, but as a valuable resource.
SUB project: Marine Renewable Hub
The Marine Renewable Hub in Hirtshals is a subproject under CO2VISION, driven by the vision of enabling ships to refuel with climate-friendly fuels produced locally.
The project focuses on conducting analyses and feasibility studies to support the development of the port as a hub for CO₂-neutral shipping and producing green fuels such as methanol at the port, positioning Hirtshals as a key player in the transition to sustainable maritime transport.
the challenge
For shipping to transition to CO₂-neutral fuels, new supply chains for green fuel production and distribution must be developed. This requires reliable access to renewable energy and CO₂, which is available from local sources such as biogas plants and waste incineration facilities, as well as modern port infrastructure capable of supporting both fuel production and bunkering.
The project has identified strong potential for creating integrated, locally based solutions that can meet these needs.
the solution
As part of the Marine Renewable Hub initiative, a series of analyses and feasibility studies have been conducted, highlighting the potential for establishing green fuel production in and around Hirtshals. Key activities included:
- CO₂ capture and liquefaction at GrønGas Hjørring
- Development of a business case for a methanol production facility in Port of Hirtshals
- Analysis of CO₂ transport options from regional point sources to the port, including the use of pipelines
- Concept design for a future electrolysis plant to produce hydrogen using renewable energy from local sources
Together, these efforts have laid a strong foundation for continued development of green fuel infrastructure and for positioning the port as a central player in the transition to sustainable transport.
impact
Marine Renewable Hub has helped pave the way for CO₂-neutral shipping from Hirtshals. The project has generated new knowledge, forged strategic partnerships, and identified concrete opportunities for green fuel production and supply.
These insights and experiences are now contributing to the continued effort to position North Jutland as a green frontrunner and as a strong international player in CO₂ management and sustainable fuel technologies.
